Inside the Argent Alpha Lab: Saunas, Executive Health, and Performance Upgrades

#108

This week, I’m pulling back the curtain on what I’ve been researching, experimenting with, and implementing in my own life and within the Argent Alpha community. It’s all about pushing limits and challenging the narrative of what’s possible for men over 50. Here’s what I’ve been working on lately, and how you can use these insights to fuel your journey.

1. Saunas: The Science Behind the Sweat

I’ve been exploring the benefits of infrared saunas. While I haven’t used traditional saunas (yet—it's on my list), my focus has been on how infrared technology can support recovery and overall well-being. Unlike traditional saunas, which heat the air around you, infrared saunas use infrared waves to penetrate deeper into the body, heating muscles and tissues directly.

  • What I’ve Found: Beyond a good sweat, infrared saunas offer benefits like improved circulation, faster muscle recovery, and stress reduction. For men over 50, the appeal extends further. Regular sauna use has been linked to enhanced cognitive health, reducing the risk of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s. Saunas can also boost cardiovascular health by lowering blood pressure and improving heart rate variability, a key measure of heart health. Plus, they can support body composition by raising metabolism and promoting fat loss. My standard is 4x a week for 20 minutes at 175 degrees.

  • Why This Matters: Adding a sauna routine can be a powerful way to maintain mental sharpness and overall health as you age, especially if you prefer a gentler heat experience compared to traditional saunas.

  • Try This: Considering a sauna at home? Compare ready-made models and DIY setups, and research EMF levels if you choose infrared. Not ready to invest yet? Look into recovery studios offering memberships with access to infrared saunas, red light therapy, compression therapy, cold plunging, and hot tubs. These memberships allow you to try different therapies without the upfront costs or maintenance of owning one.

2. Rethinking Executive Health Programs

In the search for ways to optimize health, I’ve been exploring alternatives to traditional executive health programs—ones that align with the proactive, high-performance ethos of Argent Alpha. Programs like Wild Health, Parsley Health, and Cleveland Clinic's Center for Functional Medicine offer a more personalized and comprehensive approach, combining advanced diagnostics with precision medicine.

  • What I’ve Found: These programs dive deep into genetic testing, advanced lab work, and tailored health plans to address your unique needs. They aim to optimize health rather than just managing symptoms. This approach is all about being proactive—catching potential issues before they become problems and building resilience for the future. I currently use Dr. Mark Hyman’s Function Health and work with a local naturopathic physician. I also recently started using Ways2Well which I learned about in a Joe Rogan Episode podcast with guest Brigham Buhler.

  • Why This Matters: For men over 50, this shift is about defying typical expectations and maintaining peak performance well into the later years. It matches our goal of being “harder to kill” by focusing on what truly drives health, not just the symptoms.

  • Try This: Start with an in-depth blood panel or work with a healthcare provider who specializes in precision medicine. Note: this is unlikely to be your primary care physician and it likely won’t be paid for by insurance but you can start there. Focus on gathering actionable data, like hormone levels, inflammatory markers, and metabolic health indicators, to guide your health decisions. It’s about creating a roadmap that fits your body’s needs and your goals.

3. Mental Models: Thinking Like a Billionaire

Charlie Munger’s mental models have been a cornerstone in improving decision-making and cutting through complexity. Revisiting these frameworks has been transformative for both my personal and professional life, especially when applied alongside the work we’re doing at Argent Alpha.

  • What I’ve Found: Two mental models stand out for their impact: Inversion—solving problems by thinking about what could go wrong first—and Circle of Competence—focusing on areas where you have expertise and avoiding those where you don’t. These models help in simplifying decisions and focusing energy where it has the greatest impact.

  • Why This Matters: With life constantly throwing new challenges our way, having a structured approach to decision-making can help stay on track. It’s about maximizing your strengths while avoiding costly mistakes.

  • Try This: Apply Inversion to a challenge you’re facing—ask yourself, “What would make this go terribly wrong?” This perspective can help you avoid pitfalls and clarify your next steps. Also, map out your Circle of Competence—identify where your strengths lie and focus your efforts there for greater success.

4. The 10x Triad: A New Way to Elevate Performance

The 10x Triad is a concept I’ve been developing with Brock Harling and Clint Murray, both key players in Argent Alpha. We’re using ourselves as test cases to refine this approach, aiming to create a model that can help others achieve exponential growth in a structured, accountable way.

  • What It Is: The 10x Triad consists of three people working closely together, each committed to their own growth while supporting the other two. It’s a simple but powerful concept: accountability and collaboration multiply your efforts, making 10x growth more achievable than going it alone.

  • Why We’re Doing It: Our goal is to create a scalable framework that blends personal accountability with a team dynamic. When you have two others pushing you and sharing their own progress, it creates a synergy that drives everyone to greater heights.

  • How It Works: Each member sets clear goals, and we meet regularly to review progress, troubleshoot obstacles, and celebrate wins. It’s about being both a student and a teacher, contributing to a culture of continuous improvement.

  • The Benefits: The 10x Triad boosts accountability, creates a strong sense of camaraderie, and pushes you to maintain high standards. It’s not just about getting feedback—it’s about setting a pace that encourages everyone to level up.

  • Try This: Consider forming a triad with two other driven individuals. Set up a weekly check-in, even if it’s just 15 minutes, where you share progress, challenges, and next steps. The structure and mutual accountability can provide a significant boost in reaching your goals.

5. Dan Sullivan’s Frameworks: Tools for Exponential Growth

Dan Sullivan’s ideas have been a guiding light, especially as we develop the 10x Triad. His concepts like “10x is Easier Than 2x”, “Who Not How”, and “The Gap and the Gain” have reshaped how we think about growth and achievement.

  • What I’ve Found: “10x is Easier Than 2x” pushes you to think beyond incremental improvements and demands a complete overhaul of your approach. “Who Not How” emphasizes finding the right people to achieve your vision rather than struggling through every detail alone. And “The Gap and the Gain” encourages focusing on progress made, rather than how far you still have to go.

  • Why This Matters: These frameworks perfectly complement the work we’re doing in the 10x Triad. They shift the focus from small wins (which are important) to bigger breakthroughs, helping us stay motivated and on track.

  • Try This: Make a habit of applying “The Gap and the Gain”—look back at where you were six months ago and celebrate how far you’ve come. When tackling a new goal, ask, “Who can help me achieve this?” instead of thinking you need to do it all yourself. It’s a mindset shift that opens up new opportunities.

Wrapping Up

Research, experimentation, and implementation are what keep me and the entire Argent Alpha community moving forward. Sharing what I’m working on with you is about sparking new ideas and offering insights you can put into action. If any of these resonate, or if you’ve got questions, hit reply and let me know. I’d love to hear what you’re exploring too.
